FAQs

What is Kids Inclusion?

Kids Inclusion is an adapted sports program with the goal of putting kids with and without disabilities on the same team. Kids Inclusion will look like a traditional sports program, there will be weekly practice and weekly games. If you have participated in any recreational sports program then you know what to expect.

What sports are you offering?

Each year we will offer: Bowling, Softball, Basketball, Track and Field (fall), and Soccer. All sports will be modified to fit your child’s ability, that way you can participate no matter what!

My child is very distracted and it takes a lot to keep them engaged in activities. Can they still play?

Of course! All children have a spot in Kids Inclusion. Our coaches will have a background check and be trained on inclusion strategies for children with disabilities.

What is the cost for Kids Inclusion?

We want Kids Inclusion to be accessible for as many kids as possible, and with the help of generous donors and volunteers we are able to keep our costs low! Kids Inclusion charges a fee of $20 per child, per sport, and this covers t-shirts, facilities, and equipment (unless otherwise specified at registration).

We also offer a limited amount of scholarships so that more of our friends can join the fun without worrying about the cost.

How do I sign up?

We will have actively open registrations posted at kidsinclusion.org where you will find the online registration platform. If your child has a disability please download and print the required medical form. This is to ensure the safety of your child while participating in Kids Inclusion sports.

Wait, there’s medical paperwork. Can you tell me more about that?

A medical is required for children with a disability to make sure their doctor is okay with them playing sports. Some of our friends deal with medical conditions that may limit what they can or cannot do. However, Kids Inclusion will do our best to modify the sports so even with certain restrictions your child can still play! Your medical is good for 3 years. Kids Inclusion staff will notify you when it is time to update your medical.

Okay we are in! We registered, now what?

After you register, you will be contacted by Kids Inclusion staff to inform you of when Draft Night will be held.  After Draft Night your head coach will let you know when practices and games will be played!

A draft? What is that?

Draft Night is Kids Inclusions way of assessing the skill level of all participants. Our goal is to form the most equal teams to allow for fun friendly competition. This also allows the Turn Center staff to see your kids play and determine which modifications, if any, will be necessary. Draft Night is REQUIRED to participate in Kids Inclusion sports and will be offered prior to the beginning of each sport.

Modifications? Like you are going to change the rules?

The rules and integrity of the game will absolutely remain intact. We in no way attend to make the game look anything other than it is meant to be. Modifications are just simple ways we can include everyone. Here’s an example: In track our friends in a wheelchair may not be able to jump for the long jump, instead they will be allowed to give their wheelchair one push and we will measure that distance instead. If you have specific questions about modifications, please reach out to Turn Center (806-353-3596) and we will give you more information.

How does my organization volunteer?

Because this is a sports league, there are only a few volunteer opportunities. If your organization is within the age range our suggestion is you sign everyone up to play. The best way to learn about disability awareness, promote leadership skills and facilitate empathy is by playing alongside children with disabilities. If you are an adult and want to volunteer we ask that you register as a coach. This is ultimately the best way to serve in Kids Inclusion.

Coach? I’ve never worked with disabilities! How would I coach?

All coaches will be trained by a therapist prior to Draft Night that focuses on inclusion, common diagnoses and behaviors you may see. This training will use video examples and interactive experience to best prepare you. You will never be the only coach. All teams will have 8-10 participants and at least 2 coaches. One of your coaches may be a therapist or person who has experience with inclusion or disabilities. Coaches will also have direct access to Kids Inclusion staff throughout the entire season.

This seems like a big commitment. What is the time commitment like?

No more than 15 hours for the entire 6 week season.

  • 1 hour Inclusion training

  • 2 hour Draft

  • 12 hours practice and games

THAT’S IT!
